In Search of Lara Elizabeth Lee

… an adoption story

Identifying Information

Our daughter was born Jennifer Christine deBruin. Since then she has two full siblings in her birth family, Jennifer Leigh and Kristopher Patrick. Going by the first names of her siblings it is obvious that we never stopped thinking about her. It may seem like I am always writing about her as a third person but that is because I am hoping for assistance from some Search Angel and if I were speaking directly to her then I would be talking face to face. Wouldn’t I?

When the Provincial Government finally enacted the bill to “somewhat open” records for adoptees and birth parents we both applied for Lara’s updated information we were fortunate that both of us applied because as we found out soon enough many of the records on file excluded the fathers name ( even though mothers were adamant that they had given that information). Many records seemed to be cleaned to remove information about the mother’s situation at the time of relinquishment. It might have prevented adoption if the adoptive parents knew the mother was a drug addict at the time.

Our new information tells us that Jennifer became Lara Elizabeth Lee when she was adopted. Her adoption order number was oo3420 and was finalized on June 5th 1969 and registered on June 11, 1969. She was given an ammended birth certificate under the same number of 083976. Her adoption order was ammended to A-003420-69 to reflect her adoption.

It still amazes me how Government agencies can change legal documents at will.
